Salt warehouses – an unusual and to some extent a symbolic corner of Vitebsk. The architectural monument of the 18th century has not lost its relevance today. True, with one difference: more than two centuries ago Salt warehouses were built to store food supplies. And now here is the spiritual treasure of Vitebsk.

Perhaps one of these trips will lead you to the Salt Warehouses – a monument of architecture of Vitebsk at the end of the 18th century. In the history of the city of Vitebsk it is noted that the Salt warehouses, in the people of which they are still called camps, were built in 1774. Their main purpose was to store strategic stocks of flour, salt and grain. Initially, the structure of the complex consisted of three buildings, which were connected with each other by arches. But, unfortunately, only two of them have survived to this day – central and right lateral.
The Salt Warehouses of Vitebsk – attractions in the post-war Vitebsk, army supplies were kept here for a while. And recently the Center of Folk Crafts “Zadvinje” was opened in the unique monument of architecture of Vitebsk. But the essence remained the same. True, with an insignificant correction for the present. Whereas in the past there was food stored in the salt depots, today the cultural and historical complex “The Golden Ring of the City of Vitebsk” Dvina “(the modern name of the center) protects the cultural and spiritual heritage of the Vitebsk region, represented by unique examples of arts and crafts.
A walk through the Salt Warehouses promises to be rich, pleasant and impressive. And not only because the history of Vitebsk breathes a full chest here. Here carefully guard the future of the townspeople, the essence of which lies hidden in the spiritual heritage. Perhaps, therefore, the former Salt warehouses have become a kind of center of folk art. Here the work of the workshops is organized – if desired, together with the master, you can do straw-making or modeling of clay and feel the originality of folk craftsmanship and talent. Here is opened the exhibition hall, which contained the best examples of decorative and applied art. Here lives the soul of the people.
