Cretaceous quarries near Volkovysk in a very short time became the most popular “wild” landmark of Belarus. “Wild”, as in fact a career today is a technical object, not a tourist one. But lovers of the “tent” rest have long expressed their opinion and refuse to see the “Belarusian Maldives” because of the prohibition sign categorically refuse.
As soon as they do not call chalk quarries near Volkovysk: a tourist mecca of Belarusians, Belarusian Maldives, the most popular landmark of Volkovysk district, a paradise for photographers… Unique landscape and bright turquoise water provided careers with the popularity and love of tourists.
Today the Cretaceous quarries near Volkovysk occupy an area of 300 football fields.
What do tourists do in the chalk quarries, in addition to admiring the stunning scenery. They bathe, eat shish kebabs and sing songs to the guitar at the fire? First, the chalk quarries are a paradise for fishermen (many careers are filled with fish), and secondly, a paradise for divers (finally they do not need to fly to the Red Sea or the Maldives to work out their hobby), thirdly, paradise for fans of extreme (steep slopes and great depth of quarries provide this). Recently, domestic pop stars have chosen the chalk quarries to shoot clips for their songs (and why not? There is no need to spend money on the Maldives, and landscapes are not worse!).
As you can guess from the name, in the quarries near Volkovysk once chalk was mined. Over time, used quarries are filled with water. At the same time, some amount of chalk still remains at the bottom of the quarries, so the water acquires such a beautiful color – from azure to bright turquoise, even emerald. The landscape is complemented by high steep banks, overgrown with young trees, and huge boulders and pieces of silicon, more like meteorites. In general, a feeling of fantasy, unreality, even somewhere surrealistic of the painting called “Cretaceous quarries near Volkovysk” is created.
Chalk quarries are actually located near the town of Krasnoselskoe (hence the second name – Chalk quarries in Krasnoselsky). By the way, little place in Belarus has such a great tourist potential, like Krasnoselskoye. After all, only in 2012 it was visited by about 100,000 unorganized tourists! But Cretaceous careers are not the only attraction of Krasnoselsky. From the lessons of history everyone is familiar with the name of the settlement Krasnoselskoe. It is here that the oldest silicic mines in Belarus are located, where primitive people, about five thousand years ago, extracted a valuable breed for the production of tools. True, today unique wells are wells are preserved. And the project to open the museum has been gathering dust on the shelves for many years. Similarly, so far only the idea remains to build around the chalky quarry of camping, to open food outlets, to create equipped parking lots and beaches, to organize the rental of tents, to include chalk quarries in tourist routes. After all, it is such sights, as the Cretaceous open-cast mines in Krasnoselsky, are capable of bringing a decent income.
