There are many museums dedicated to the life and work of one of the most vivid and famous expressionists, the native of Belarus, Marc Chagall. One of the most interesting and unusual is the art center of Marc Chagall, which can easily be found in the old part of the city of Vitebsk.
The art center of Marc Chagall opened its doors in 1992, despite the discontent of the townspeople, because the artist and his works contradicted the canons of the life of a simple Soviet man. In the art center you can meet a large number of letters from residents, asking not to open another museum in Vitebsk, dedicated to the artist. Unlike many other museums dedicated to the life and work of Chagall, the art center in its exposition focuses on showing the inner perception of the great avant-garde through his paintings and scenography.
If you are familiar with one of the most famous works of the recognized master “Above the City”, you can easily find the art center of Marc Chagall. Two-story house made of red brick with two chimneys strikes the eye, both in the picture and in real life. The building of the youngest museum dedicated to Marc Chagall was formerly owned by a noble family and was built in the 19th century. Its walls can tell a lot of stories related to the artist and the history of the city of Vitebsk.
The art center of Marc Chagall is really unique: the museum’s rooms store more than 300 different avant-garde works, including lithographs and etchings. The museum collected works of the artist from all over the world for a long time. Children and grandchildren of Chagall, friends and acquaintances – many presented the museum with illustrations and graphic works of different periods of creativity. Also on the basis of the art center a scientific library is opened, where more than 3,000 publications are kept. Thanks to the generous gift of the German doctor Heinrich Mandel, who gave the art museum many books and samples of graphics.
We advise you to visit the art center of Marc Chagall on June 7th. This day is celebrated the birthday of the recognized master. The House-Museum and the Art Center named after Marc Chagall arrange colorful events and exhibit the most famous works of the artist collected around the World. Not only these two museums, but the whole city is dipped into the atmosphere of the holiday. Readings are performed in the streets and artists perform.
The Art Center of Marc Chagall is considered to be an important landmark of the city of Vitebsk.
