One of the most beautiful and large regional centers of Belarus is Mogilev. In this picturesque and filled with unique architecture the city and in the winter, and in summer it is always possible to meet tourists. And this is not surprising, since Mogilev has a high tourist potential.
Almost every tour begins with the main square of the city – Lenin Square. By the way, practically in every city in all post-Soviet countries there is an area with the same name, where there is also a monument to Vladimir Ilyich. In Mogilev, there is another unique building on the square – the House of Soviets, which has a rich and interesting history.
Once upon a time Mogilev was considered as the capital of Belarus. In this regard, it was decided to decorate the main square of the city and ennoble it, as well as leave all the architectural sights near it. Therefore, the building was decided not to demolish and assign it the status of state national heritage. Therefore, today it adorns the city with its monumentality, grandeur and beauty.
Those tourists who were in Minsk and saw the Government House, will instantly note the striking similarity of the capital’s building with the Mogilev House of Soviets. In this case, the “father” of these two buildings is one – the famous architect Joseph Langbard. Many consider two Belarusian buildings as twin brothers, but the House of Soviets is still smaller in size than the capital building. And on importance is much inferior to the Government House. Nevertheless, this building is one of the main decorations of Mogilev.
In those days when the Second World War was about to begin, Stalin wanted to make Mogilev the capital of the BSSR, since only 35 kilometers from Minsk was the state border, from which, in fact, the attack of enemy German troops was expected. At the same time, Stalin was eager to preserve the Government House with all his might and decided to make a copy of the Minsk equivalent, since, in his opinion, there would not be any left from the state building and stone when attacking Minsk. But there were so many important events in it and a lot of significant political decisions were made!
So, the best Belarusian architects went to Mogilev with the aim to erect a new building as soon as possible – the House of Soviets. However, it was not so easy to adopt a new departmental institution. The Commission found fault with the fact that the partitions on the windows resembled an Orthodox cross, and then the Soviet politicians categorically rejected all religious topics. However, the chief architect of the Langbard project replied that such crosses would drive away all the evil forces from the members of the party. As a result, the building was still commissioned.
Today, the Mogilev Regional Executive Committee and the main educational building of the Belarusian-Russian University are located in the former Council House. If you climb the roof of the building, then there is a stunning view of the panorama of Mogilev, especially an amazing picture opens at night, when the whole city turns on the lights. Mogilev is filled with magic…
By the way, to make the differences from the Government House more noticeable, the Mogilev project was decided to be supplemented with an annex that serves as a meeting room. It, by the way, is constantly compared with the Oval Hall, which is certainly very flattering to the authors of the Mogilev project.
